SHOCK ABSORBING DEVICE FOR VEHICLES
Description
Stability, control, and safe operation of a vehicle depend heavily on its suspension system. An excessive level of vibrations in the vehicle can compromise not only its comfort but even put the safety of its occupants at risk. Vehicles currently have active suspension systems, in some cases highly sophisticated from a mechanical point of view, which allow them to optimize their performance on the road while guaranteeing maximum safety for their occupants.
In this invention, a shock absorber device based on non-Newtonian liquids has been developed that allows the basic tasks of a vehicle shock absorber to be carried out, but using a simpler design and with fewer moving parts. The device takes advantage of the characteristics of non-Newtonian liquids, which increase their viscosity with shear rate, to obtain the necessary damping curves for a vehicle's suspension system to function properly. The design of the device is simple, which results in a robust device that offers the same functional characteristics as conventional shock absorbers.
Advantages
Among the advantages of this invention the following can be listed:
- Simpler design, therefore cheaper and easier to manufacture
- There are no parts in friction with the walls of the piston as in the case of a conventional shock absorber. This results in less wear and maintenance on the device.
- Ease of adoption of measures for the control of active suspension systems in the device
Uses and Applications
The device can be applied in any system that needs vibration damping. Mainly in vehicles: cars, motorcycles, etc., specifically in motorcycles where excessive and uncontrolled vibrations in the direction of the vehicle can put the driver's safety at risk and in vehicle suspension systems to improve comfort and safety. But it is also feasible to use in machinery for the damping of vibrations that occur in them.
