PREPARATION AND STORAGE OF THE PROBIOTIC Pdp11 FOR THE CONTROL OF DISEASES AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE GROWTH IN FISH
Description
Probiotics are microorganisms that, administered in the diet of individuals, provide health benefits. There are several mechanisms proposed for the mode of action of probiotics: (i) suppression of pathogens; (ii) an immunostimulating effect; and (iii) the possible improvement of host nutrition. The probiotic Shewanella putresfaciens Pdp11 is a bacterium isolated from the skin of healthy sea bream. It is known, among others, its ability to protect fish (sea bream and sole) against inoculation with bacterial pathogens (specifically against Photobacterium damselae subsp. Piscicida).
Advantages
The great problem with the oral administration of probiotics is that these bacteria can die before reaching the intestine, either due to dehydration when in contact with the feed or due to the action of digestive enzymes in the stomach. The method presented here attempts to solve these problems. Other methods of administering probiotics orally have been described. In all cases, probiotics are added or mixed with the feed without prior treatment. This can generate a high mortality rate in bacteria (especially those that are more susceptible to environmental changes) which can reduce its usefulness as a probiotic. There are methods to increase the survival of bacteria, such as preservation by desiccation with prebiotics, but in the case of Shewanella, desiccation is not feasible.
Uses and Applications
Control of diseases in fish and improvement in their growth, particularly through the use of said probiotic (Pdp11) in the production of food products for fish, particularly feed.
